Emancipation.” Painting by Thomas Nast (1863)

The war was over, the North had won and slavery was soon after abolished, made to be illegal in the Union. It was a time for the slaves to finally grasp freedom and the liberties that were granted to all those that lived in the US at the time. However, many didn’t agree with this, even if the rights were given to the slaves, many didn't feel they were equal to the whites.

It was during this time that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and Andrew Johnson took over as president, serving from 1865 to 1869. Johnson agreed that the North had won the war, that things in the North should be acknowledged but that the constitution should hold firm and not be changed, though the slaves had been freed. This didn’t sit well with many that wanted to see changes made, wanting the newly freed slaves to have the same rights that the whites had at this time. It was a congressional fight against the President, some said they would work with him and tried to which laws failed to get past him and his veto power. Though during his presidency the 14th and 15th Amendments were passed, the 14th being passed even after his veto.
